During this most intimate and personal conversation, I speak on being a survivor of 9/11 then a few months later, my mother suffered a stroke at age 54. During this time, she designated me as her official patient advocate. My sister was murdered in her home in September 2011. I fought for and was awarded custody of my niece and nephew in November 2012. I worked with the Brooklyn District Attorney’s Office to bring my sister’s murderer to justice, while simultaneously seeking custody of her sister’s children. While facing all of these adversities and working towards resilience, I still felt an obligation to continue to work full-time and stay engaged professionally and civically engaged by lobbying on Capitol Hill for fair treatment and equity in the workplace. I believe resilience is in all of our DNA. I speak on what my DNA has taught me and what yours can teach you.
